1) Feature Article: What is Ortho-Bionomy?

Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive, osteopathically-based form of body therapy. Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls, DO and founder of this technique describes how it works this way: "Injury or disuase result from what I call 'misundersanding'. Ortho-Bionomy brings understanding to the person so that he or she may respond appropriately, rather than by habit or fear."

Simply put, the ortho-bionomy practitioner uses gentle movements and positions of the body to facilitate the change of stress and pain patterns that the client is holding. One important aspect of ortho-bionomy is the comfort of the client: no forceful manipulations are used, rather freedom from limited movement and pain is achieved gently and respectfully.
I have found great success through adding this technique to my tool belt in practice. As with all of the many techniques that I intersperse in your treatments, Ortho-Bionomy weaves it's way in to the session as needed and the results are powerful.

2) Ortho-Bionomy: How does it work?

  • The body's self-corrective reflexes are stimulated, helping you to achieve balance and comfort.
  • Movement and gentle compression within the treatment guide your body to positions of comfort which then liberates you to change stress and pain patterns
  • Your inner awareness is re-awoken and repected, allowing you to re-discover the state of balance and well-being that is available to you, both physically and emotionally.
  • Deep relaxation is achieved as tight muscles loosen, circulation improves and restricted joints ease toward freedom in range of motion.
  • The treatment is reinforced with homecare suggestions and the benefits are long-lasting as your body integrates the work in the hours and days after your session.

3) Your Massage Therapist is a Life-Long Learner

As a Registered Massage Therapist, I am required to complete 24 credits of Continuing Education every 2 years. This usually manifests as 2-3 workshops per cycle. For you, the client this helps to ensure that your Massage Therapists are continually upgrading their skills and knowledge, which enhances our ability to assist you in your health care needs.

It is inspiring to continually learn and grow as a RMT through the various post graduate courses that I have participated in. I bring this added knowledge to you during our sessions, and you may notice that my techniques evolve and shift over the years as new techniques are explored and past education is revisited. I hope you enjoy this diversity in your appointments with Cascade Massage Therapy. It is always my goal to help you achieve balance and comfort, freedom from pain and relief from stress and tension.

Kathy Kain is the author of a practical manual for Ortho-Bionomy students and practitioners. The following words from her Foreword are inspiring and a succinct summary of the essence of Ortho-Bionomy:

I believe much of the effectiveness of Ortho-Bionomy comes from its ability to inform us of relationship: of oneself to oneself; oneself to environment and oneself to others. If any of these relationships are not working well, the body will express this. As a metaphor for our lives, our bodies don’t lie. Ortho-Bionomy mirrors the story of our lives in physical or energetic forms. It acts as a reflection for recognizing life patterns that don’t work or that create pain. If we cannot move our arm, we may adjust to this restriction so effectively that we stop noticing it. Ortho-Bionomy helps bring the noticing back. We may have so much pain that we forget how to pay attention to comfort. Ortho-Bionomy is a way for us to notice comfort. It gives a way to access choice and create change that is natural, non-intrusive and self-generated.”

5) About Cascade Massage Therapy

My Approach

I bring over 18 years of bodywork experience and education to the massage table!

I offer you diverse and comprehensive massage therapy sessions. Your treatment goals are foremost and your needs will be heard and addressed. I utilize both traditional and alternative treatment techniques, and recommend self care tips and exercise options that evolve with your individual healing process. My intention is to be a facilitator in the cascade of your healing process and health maintenance. I believe that within the human body is the desire and ability to be well, and through bodywork, I serve to act as a catalyst for this process.

This is your time - I encourage you to enjoy the stillness of your session, and sense the changes occurring in your body while we work - you don’t need to be entertaining or start a conversation; that being said, please recognize that I do not read minds. I expect my clients to participate in his or her experience and give feedback when there is any discomfort during the treatment.

Cascade Massage Therapy is focused on education and prevention. It is important that you know what you can do to help prevent stress, tension, and pain when you are not with me. I allow for time at the end of our session to converse, suggest self care tips and exercises that would be beneficial for you, and answer any questions that you may have.

I believe that prolonged stress, whether environmental, physical or emotional is a primary factor in dis-ease and a true obstacle to healing.

Therefore, I welcome you to a peace-filled and relaxing environment for you to experience relief from chronic pain.
